When temps outside are chilly, Norfork Lake can appear to be a boiling cauldron with wisps of steamy plumes reaching high up in the sky.

We're rolling out the Welcome mat for the many bikers who will be traveling across the country on their way to Springdale, Arkansas, this September for Bikes, Blues & BBQ Festival in the north/west part of the state. For those folks needing a lodging pit stop to break up their cross-country trek, then we might be the place for you. We are a comfortable 3-hour drive east of Bikes, Blues & BBQ -- so those people traveling a long distance who'd prefer to break up their drive, please consider staying in a cabin...either on the way to Bikes, Blues and BBQ, or for your drive back home after the festivities! ...we'd enjoy having you. :)

By KENNETH L. KIESER Leavenworth Times outdoor columnist Posted May. 7, 2014 @ 6:29 pm Imagine going fishing in a boat with three professional fisherman on a dark, moonless night without lights. Then imagine this was your first fishing trip.Scary? You bet, just ask Valory Zortman. Her parents own Mockingbird Bay Resort on Norfork Lake in Arkansas, and she was not passing up this opportunity to fish for the legendary stripers she had heard about. The beautiful college coed was instructed on how to cast spinning tackle in a 19 ½ foot Legend bass boat with three other fishermen, or in other words, fishing in total darkness without hooking someone in the head with a big treble hook.Zortman and company were fishing in beautiful Norfork Lake for the healthy striper population, a predator that makes savage attacks and long runs like a rocket bound for Jupiter while stripping line and taxing reel drag systems with ease. Most people start out fishing for crappie or bluegill, but not Zortman. She was entering the fishing world in difficult conditions for a challenging fish. The night-time ride was cool and refreshing as the smooth-running Legend boat split the waves toward a distant cove with promising structure. Each angler cast straight out towards the shore and began a medium speed retrieve with Rogue lures.Veteran outdoor writer John Felsher soon hooked a ...

As many of you know, we hosted a Norfork Lake Chamber of Commerce fishing media event here at Mockingbird Bay Resort, sponsored by Plano / Frabill, where Arkansas State Tourism invited a handful of awesome outdoor professional writers and pro staff to come to Norfork Lake and experience some stellar fishing, thanks to local guides, some out-of-state guides thanks to Rick Pierce of Bass Cat Boats and the Mountain Home Chamber of Commerce. A good time was had by all! Fishing was great! Frank and Val got to go out on a couple of occasions and enjoy the lake as well. It was a 4-day event topped off with a delicious fish fry and live music by the band Coyote Union. Go to Mockingbird Bay Resort's Facebook page for more photos -- I'll be gradually posting more. A couple of fishing buddies from Missouri were having some good luck catching small mouth bass and stripers this weekend! Luckily, they entered the Fishing Derby -- so their catch may earn them $500 (per species). Good Luck to them! :)By Loretta Zortman

Finally, it is feeling and looking like Spring is here to stay! The daffodils are up in full force. The tulips are not out yet -- but their greens are about 5 inches tall...so it won't be long now. I noticed yesterday that the redbuds have little pink buds forming, so they'll be next. After the redbuds, the dogwoods pop -- and THAT is a sight to behold around here! Gorgeousness! :) Hope it's warm wherever you are! :)
